History of Indian Museum

The Asiatic Society of Bengal was established in 1784 by Sir William Jones. Founded in the Asiatic Society Building of Indian Museum in 1814, the famous Danish botanist Dr. Nathaniel was killed by the valleys. In the year 1840, the government expanded the segment of geology and minerals and an additional grant of INR 250 per month was given for the geology section alone.

Architecture of India Museum

The structure of the Indian Museum is an architectural grandeur designed by the famous Italian architect Walter B. Gravelli. The building has three floors, each having an area of about 930 square meters. There are a total of sixty galleries which are divided into six main sections: Anthropology, Arts, Archeology, Zoology, Botany and Geology.

Archeology Section: Archeology section includes Pre and Prosthetic Gallery, Main Entry Gallery, Bharhut Gallery, Gandhara Gallery, Long Archeology Gallery, Bronze Gallery, Coin Gallery, Short Art Gallery and Egyptian Gallery.


Art section: It includes Mughal painting gallery, Bengal painting gallery, decorative and textile art gallery of Southeast Asia.


Anthropology section : Anthropology section includes Paleo-Anthropology Gallery, Cultural Anthropology Gallery, Mask Gallery, and Musical Instrument Gallery.

Zoology Sections : The Zoology section includes fish gallery, amphibious and reptile gallery, bird gallery, mammal gallery and ecological gallery.
Geology section: Geology sections include Civil Gallery, Invertbrate Fossil Gallery, Rock and Mineral Gallery Earth and Gem Section Meteorite Gallery
