The Victoria Memorial is a large marble building, which is considered to be the pride of Kolkata. Built between 1906 and 1921, it is dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria. History of Victoria Memorial

In January 1901, on the death of Queen Victoria ,Kedleston's first Baron Curzon suggested to build an appropriate monument. Lord Curzon proposed to build a grand building with a museum and gardens.Curzon said,
Therefore, we have a building, plush, spacious, beautiful and elegant, in which every newcomer from Calcutta will go, in which all the resident, European and native residents will flock, where all classes will learn the lessons of history. And see the miracle of the past in front of their eyes.

Design and Architecture Design of Victoria Memorial

William Emerson, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, is the architect of Victoria Memorial's main architect. They at the same time took inspiration from the Egyptian Venice, Mughal and other Islamic styles, and gave a memorial to the taste of an Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The building of 184 feet high is made with white color Makrana marble which was brought from Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The giant garden that surrounds the monument, and spread over 64 acres, was designed by the botanist Sir David Penn and Lord Reddell.

The Victoria Memorial, from October to June, is a light and sound show called Son-At-Lumiere. This interesting show is not shown on Monday, Holi festival, National Holidays, and is closed from July to September.
